How Varam Foods Found Success by Serving a Diverse Community

In the heart of Sutton Coldfield, nestled between high streets and homes, is a store built not just on business savvy – but on community.
Meet Ram Mohan, the founder of Varam Foods, an Indian grocery store that’s become a cornerstone for the area’s growing South Asian population. But this business didn’t start with a grand strategy or corporate funding – it started with a conversation at home.
“The idea actually came from my wife,” says Ram. “She told me there was a big Indian community here and that with my experience, I should give it a try.”
That one suggestion sparked the beginning of something much bigger.
A Business Built on Belonging
What sets Varam Foods apart is more than just its product range, it’s the personal connection Ram has built with every customer.
“We try to treat our customers like friends,” he explains. “That’s how the business grew, not just through products, but through relationships.”
Serving a diverse Indian community came with its challenges.
India is a country of 28 states and hundreds of regional cultures, and each customer had specific needs.
“At first, it was hard. Everyone wanted something different, something from home. So we started importing items from India directly by parcel even, just to make sure we had what they were looking for.”

Words of Advice for Fellow Founders
For Ram, entrepreneurship has brought challenges, but it’s also given him freedom.
“If you can’t take risk in business, it’s not going to work,” he says. “But I’d always tell people: start something of your own. It’s worth it.”
