England Rugby and Exeter Chiefs Women’s star, Claudia Macdonald, recently visited Wallace Fields Junior School in Surrey—her former school—to inspire students about the importance of sustainability. While sharing her journey to rugby success, Claudia focused on spreading her passion for making environmentally conscious choices, encouraging the students to think about the small steps they can take to protect the planet.
Claudia Macdonald, now a renowned figure in the rugby world, is also the Sustainability Ambassador for PE. In this role, Claudia is working to raise awareness of how simple, small changes in everyday life can have a significant impact on sustainability. Her message was clear: small efforts from individuals can combine to make a huge collective difference.
“As a young child, I was always interested in sustainability and making greener choices whenever I could,” said Claudia. “This passion has stayed with me into adulthood and inspired me to launch my ‘Let’s Talk 1%’ blog, which highlights how making 1% changes in our habits can lead to big impacts for our planet. Partnering with PE has given me an even bigger platform to advocate for sustainable choices, and it’s fantastic to share this message with the next generation.”
During her visit, Claudia spoke to the students about the simple ways they could take action in their own lives—whether it’s recycling more, conserving energy, or being mindful of the resources they use. She emphasised that no action is too small, as every positive step can contribute to a greener, healthier planet.
Reflecting on the visit, Mr. Steve Lee, Headteacher at Wallace Fields Junior School, shared his excitement about the positive impact Claudia made on the students. “The children are inspired by Claudia in so many ways—not only by her achievements in rugby, but also by her commitment to sustainability. It’s wonderful to see how fondly Claudia remembers her time at our school, and her passion for helping the planet was evident in every part of her visit. Our students are now more motivated than ever to make our school greener and to actively pursue sustainability.”
For Claudia, the visit was also a return to her roots, as her mother had taught at Wallace Fields for many years. She expressed the special bond she still feels with the school, making her sustainability mission even more meaningful.
