When should businesses submit meter reads?
Businesses can submit meter readings at any time, providing them regularly helps ensure your billing remains accurate.
Many businesses choose to submit readings:
- Monthly, to keep bills closely aligned with actual usage
- Quarterly, to help maintain accurate billing throughout the year
- Before key billing periods, to ensure charges are applied correctly
For example, submitting a reading around late March or early April helps ensure usage is clearly recorded across the annual industry charging period starting on 1 April.
Even if you submit readings regularly, sending one during this period helps ensure your account reflects the most up-to-date usage information.
How to take a water meter reading
Taking a water meter reading is usually quick and straightforward.
- Locate your water meter (often outside the building, in a meter chamber or internal in a store cupboard or WC).
- Lift the cover if required.
- Record your meter serial number shown on the meter.
- Take note of the numbers on meter’s dial, ignoring the red digits or any numbers after decimal point
You can also take a photo of the meter and include it when submitting your reading as we may request further information regarding your reading.
